Built for Back Sleepers and Trim Builds Who Want a Summer Quilt That Does Double Duty
Wide quilts are cut for side sleepers, larger folks, and restless movers. The Shenandoah is cut for people who sleep on their back, don't thrash around much, and want a summer quilt that's as practical in a hammock as it is on the ground. At 48 inches across, it covers you fully without pooling underneath you or bunching when you roll to a side. Snaps and a drawcord at the head end form shoulder pockets that seal out drafts at the neck when temperatures approach the rating — giving you control without restricting movement. If you're a back sleeper on a summer through-hike or a hammock camper who wants one quilt that handles both ends of a warm night — this is it. A wide quilt will give you excess you don't need. The Shenandoah won't.
How It Gets to 14.5 oz: 850 Fill Power Down, 1.1 oz Taffeta Shell
The Shenandoah is filled with 850 Fill Power RDS-certified down. Fill power measures how many cubic inches of loft one ounce of down produces when fully expanded — at 850FP, the Shenandoah reaches its 40°F rating with less fill by weight than quilts built with lower-grade down. The shell is 1.1 oz taffeta with a DWR coating that sheds light moisture and condensation. Backpackers who want to shave weight can step up to the Ultralight Shenandoah, which uses 1000FP down and Argon 67 shell to reach 11.5 oz at the same 40°F rating.
The Shenandoah is sewn through rather than box-baffled — shell stitched directly to the lining, with no internal fabric walls. That is the right build at 40°F: a summer quilt is not asked to hold deep loft, so the walls and extra fabric a box baffle needs would add weight and cost for warmth you would not use. JRB box-baffles the 20°F and 0°F quilts, where full loft decides whether the rating holds, and leaves it out here so the Shenandoah can come in at 14.5 oz.
Every Shenandoah ships with a 25% overstuff by weight. Down naturally migrates toward the ends of each baffle over time, leaving the center of each baffle thinner. The extra fill means every section retains enough loft to hold the 40°F rating even after downshifting occurs — no cold spots through the middle of the quilt. The same buffer compensates for loft loss as the down accumulates oils between cleanings.
The foot box is formed using a drawcord, cord-locks, and double-sided Kam Snaps. Snap it closed on cool nights for a sealed foot pocket; leave it open on warm nights and use it as a blanket.
Stack It With Another Quilt for Colder Nights
The double-sided Kam Snaps do more than close the foot box. Any Multifunction quilts of the same length snap together into a single layered system — a Shenandoah 40°F over a Hudson River 20°F reaches 0°F capability, and nothing stops you adding a third. Any temperature combination works, multiples of the same rating included. Quilts made from 2019 on have the snaps; before that we used Omni Tape, which doesn't stack. Every JRB quilt you own makes the next one warmer.
At 14.5 oz, the Shenandoah is the lightest 40°F multifunction quilt in the JRB lineup — light enough for a summer through-hike and versatile enough to run as a hammock underquilt when the trip calls for it.
Also Works as a Hammock Underquilt
The Shenandoah attaches to your hammock using the JRB Underquilt Suspension System (sold separately) and insulates against the cool air beneath on warm nights. The rectangular shape conforms cleanly to the hammock's hang without bunching. Ease the end draw cords off and the quilt eases away from the hammock, letting air move across your back — we call it opening the windows, and it is handy on the nights you climb in hot. It fits all gathered-end and bridge hammocks including ENO, Hennessy, Warbonnet, Dutchware Chameleon, and most DIY designs.
Named for the Trail
Shenandoah is where families discover camping. The campgrounds along Skyline Drive sit at 3,500 feet, tucked into the oak and hickory forest of the Blue Ridge — close enough to drive in on a Friday afternoon, far enough from everything else that the phones lose signal and nobody minds. The deer walk through camp at dusk. The fireflies come out after dark. The kids roast marshmallows until the fire goes to coals.
The temperature drops faster than anyone expected. The Shenandoah was built for those trips: the June weekend when the mountains are perfect and the nights still cool to 40°, the October long weekend when the leaves are turning and everyone wears a fleece to breakfast.
