Built for Back Sleepers and Average-to-Slim Builds Who Don't Spend the Night Thrashing Around
Wide quilts are cut for side sleepers, larger folks, and restless movers. The Hudson River is cut for people who sleep on their back, don't thrash around much, and find excess fabric more of a nuisance than a comfort. At 48 inches across, it covers you fully without pooling underneath you or bunching up when you roll to a side. If you're tall and lean — think 6'3", 200 lbs, a back sleeper who occasionally drifts onto a side — this is the quilt. The extra width of a wide quilt will get in the way. The Hudson River won't.
How It Gets to 21.5 oz: 850 Fill Power Down, 1.1 oz Taffeta Shell
The Hudson River is filled with 850 Fill Power RDS-certified down. Fill power measures how many cubic inches of loft one ounce of down produces when fully expanded — at 850FP, the Hudson River achieves its 20°F rating with less fill by weight than quilts built with lower-grade down. The shell is 1.1 oz taffeta with a DWR coating that sheds light moisture and condensation. Backpackers who want to shave weight can step up to the Hudson River Ultralight, which uses 1000FP down and Argon 67 shell to reach 16.2 oz at the same 20°F rating.
The Hudson River is built with box baffles — fabric walls stitched between the shell and the lining that form closed chambers the down expands into at full thickness. A sew-through quilt skips those walls and stitches the two layers straight to each other, so every seam is a strip of pinched fabric with no insulation in it. Those strips are cold spots, and you feel them at 20°F. Box baffles take longer to build and add a little weight, which is why they are the first thing cut from cheaper three-season quilts.
Every Hudson River ships with a 25% overstuff by weight. Down naturally migrates toward the ends of each baffle over time, leaving the center of each baffle thinner. The extra fill means every section retains enough loft to hold the 20°F rating even after downshifting occurs — no cold spots through the middle of the quilt. The same buffer compensates for loft loss as the down accumulates oils between cleanings.
The foot box is formed using a drawcord, cord-locks, and double-sided Kam Snaps. Snap it closed on cold nights for a sealed foot pocket; leave it open on warm nights and use it as a blanket.
Stack It With Another Quilt for Colder Nights
The double-sided Kam Snaps do more than close the foot box. Any Multifunction quilts of the same length snap together into a single layered system — a Shenandoah 40°F over a Hudson River 20°F reaches 0°F capability, and nothing stops you adding a third. Any temperature combination works, multiples of the same rating included. Quilts made from 2019 on have the snaps; before that we used Omni Tape, which doesn't stack. Every JRB quilt you own makes the next one warmer.
At 21.5 oz, the Hudson River carries a full 20°F temperature rating through the shoulder seasons — light enough to justify on three-season trips where a summer quilt won't cut it, and warm enough when temperatures drop overnight. This quilt was built for three-season backpackers who want a clean, close fit without counting grams.
Also Works as a Hammock Underquilt
The Hudson River attaches to your hammock using the JRB Underquilt Suspension System (sold separately) and insulates against the cold air beneath — the primary cause of cold-weather hammock discomfort. Ease the end draw cords off and the quilt eases away from the hammock, letting air move across your back — we call it opening the windows, and it is handy on the nights you climb in hot. It fits all gathered-end and bridge hammocks including ENO, Hennessy, Warbonnet, Dutchware Chameleon, and most DIY designs.
Named for the Trail
The Hudson River has been drawing families to its banks for generations. Bear Mountain State Park sits just west of where the AT crosses the river — miles of trails, a campground where families have been making their first memories on the trail for decades, and fall color that peaks earlier here than almost anywhere in the Northeast. The nights cool fast in the Highlands even in late September, faster than anyone packing on a Friday afternoon remembers to account for.
The fire burns down, the kids fall asleep in the tent, and the cold off the river is sharper than the forecast suggested. The Hudson River was built for those trips: campfires, s'mores, mornings cold enough to see your breath, and the particular comfort of knowing everyone in the tent is warm.

Extremely well made, used once on an Oct. backpacking trip. Stayed warm although temps didn't get as cold as I expected or wanted. Cant wait to get it in some proper cold weather! No regrets buying from JRB!! Will be getting a lighter one for warmer weather hammocking in the future from JRB!

Took my Hudson River Quilt Long 20° out for the first time yesterday evening as a top quilt on the Mogollon Rim in AZ. Evening temperature dropped to 32.4° F quickly due to a clear sky and high elevation. After midnight some clouds rolled in and the temps rose to the low 40° F range. I was lightly clothed; Wiggy's insulated booties, no socks, Columbia hiking shorts, long sleeve tee-shirt, Wiggy's liner vest and Carhartt 2 in 1 fleece cap. I was plenty warm and did not overheat. The quilt was used with my recently purchased JRB Greylock 3 under quilt which also performed well. The workmanship of both quilts met expectations. Now I am eyeing the "Down Sleeves" so I can read my Kindle in low temps.

This is my second quilt from JRB. They are always top quality and extremely comfortable. I use them for long distance backpacking and have never been let down. I use a down quilt because it helps me save weight. I try to be as ultralight as I can and don't see the need for the zipper on a conventional sleeping bag. On the Hudson River, I love the button snaps that create the foot box. Keep up the great work.

The Hudson River is a great piece of gear! I've used HR's as UQ's and TQ's, and can honestly say it's one of my favorite items! Great loft, super soft (mine is the old .9 cedar green, which I hate to see not being used anymore), and does exactly what it's suppose to!

Love my Hudson River. So much that I now own a Shenandoah and a Rag Mnt. These universal quilts are excellent for having options for multiple family members and weather conditions. My wife likes the full length quilts as underquilts, even tho shes much shorter than me (I use Greylock 3/4's) I see zero downsides to this universal style, Its so much better to have the option to use it as a UQ when needed.

I bought this top quilt originally for UL backpacking (ground), but then after researching hammocking more, I decided to give hanging in a tree a try. Either way you decide to use it- this quilt is awesome! I have used it on several Boy Scout outings and personal trips and was toasty warm every time. The only problem is that everybody wants to use it.

I have owned my JRB Hudson River Quilt for a number of months now and I enjoy it more than my other 20 degree top quilt from an unnamed competitor to JRB. Not only does this keep me toasty warm when hanging in my Warbonnet Blackbird XLC (used as under quilt) it does double duty when I use it as a top quilt when backpacking and ground dwelling in a tent with my wife, she gets the aforementioned 20 degree competitor quilt. Extremely versatile, well constructed, lightweight, but most of all warm and comfortable. Thanks for the great product!

I took a long HR top quilt and a greylock 3 down to a wet 21 degrees in the Sierra Nevada. I cinched up the footbox as tight as I could and was pleasantly surprised it kept me and my feet warm. I did have a down jacket on, but my lower half was warm as well. I used a section of reflectex under my feet and all was good.
One small added benefit of the HR top quilt is being able to open the foot box completely and string it out on a clothesline to dry/air out back at home.

This is the first product I have ever ordered from JRB. First this quilt is phenomenal!! Warm and ultralight. I couldn't believe that it was going to fit in the provided stuff sack but it did with ease. JRB has extremely fast processing and shipping. I ordered it on a Saturday and was opening the box on the very next Wednesday. Online shopping is always a risk, I always assume that I am going to be disappointed. JRB far exceeded my expectations. I will be telling all of my friends and family about JRB and their products.

I cannot recommend this quilt highly enough. It is incredibly lightweight, takes up almost no room in my pack, and provides a very comfortable night of sleep on the trail. I've taken it down to temperatures well below 40F, and have been completely warm. I've slept with it in the low 20's with pants, socks, and a long sleeve shirt and been perfectly comfortable. This is my go to quilt.

I've had my quilt about 3 years now and used it in a wide range of conditions. It's my go to quilt for nearly any temperature in new england. Temps can vary so much here that I always like to have buffer in case of altitude variables or sudden weather. Quilts are great for this. Warmer temps (40-60F) it vents so easily that if you're too warm, there's no problem. Ive found it works well past 20F, so that covers 3.5+ seasons for me. Coldest night so far was in the Adirondacks in NY -- -10F! I layered inside the bag, and was a little chilly, but I was able to sleep just fine!

I bought this last year to use as an underquilt for my then Hennessey worked great (now I have a Warbonnet Blackbird 1.1 DBL). I live in the south Texas to be exact and it rarely gets below 20 F here. The coldest I have used it so far was down to a wet cool 30 over the Thanksgiving break last year at Lake Texoma. I was very toasty and didn’t want to get out of my hammock lol.

I am now in over 500 miles on the PCT with my Hudson River and can't say enough about how good it has been. I carry a down jacket and pants to increase my temp level, but, have never needed it with your quilt. Coldest night so far was 27.6 F and I was toasty! My tent is a single wall and twice I have had quite a lot of condensation (had it buttoned up do to rain/snow). Both times the outer layer got damp, air dryed in less than 30 min and I never got cold. Thanks a bunch for a great product!
